MArch 17, 2009

Today we didn't do the Sentence on Steroids. Instead, we worked in small groups working on the next four vignettes, "Marin," "Those Who Don't," "There Was an Old Woman...," and "Alicia Who Sees Mice." We worked with specific questions for each. They are in this order according to the vignettes listed above:

  • Explain the final line of this chapter. What does Esperanza mean when she says that Marin "is waiting for a car to stop, a star to fall, someone to change her life" (27)? (fig lang - 1)
  • In the next vignette, what is Cisneros (through Esperanza) saying about people in general? (fig lang - skip)
  • Explain the neighbors' feelings about Rosa Vargas and her children. (fig lang - 2)
  • Do you think the mice exist? Explain. (fig lang - 1)

Homework: Do the same process as before with the personal narratives for one of the following topics -

  1. someone older you used to look up to (or still do)
  2. fear of strangers
  3. dare or contest
  4. trouble with the law
