March 31, 2009

We started with a different form of the Sentences-On-Steroids today. The sentence was, "Yesterday's warm-up was long." The students were to add at least two metaphors and/or similes to the sentence to steroid the sentence up.

And, yet, we had another day of fun and adventure in The House on Mango Street. Our last "Take-A-Turn Teaching" group went and brought to us the vignette "A Smart Cookie." Both groups hit on the question of "Why wasn't the mother successful and what is the mom saying to Esperanza?" And each group asked for 3 pieces of figurative language. Great way to end the groupwork!

We then worked on the next two vignettes. For "What Sally Said," the question to be answered was, "Why won't Sally tell?" Students were asked to find 1 piece of figurative language for this vignette. For "The Monkey Garden," the question to be answered was "Where does the shift in tone occur?" Students were asked to find only 3 pieces of figurative language. This vignette is chalked full of figurative language, but we needed to keep time to have a discussion.

Homework: None again!
