Today's sentence was, "The newly painted walls looked crisp." Students were to add two pieces of figurative language to the sentence.
We then took on the next three vignettes. The first of these is "Red Clowns," in which I asked the students to write the answer to this question in their dialectical journals: What are the lies that Esperanza speaks of? In terms of the vignette Linoleum Roses, I asked, "Is Sally happy? Why or why not?" Neither of these first two had figurative language that I wanted them to write down. But "The Three Sisters" had a request for 3 pieces of figurative language and the following question: "What does the sister mean by 'You will always be Mango Street?'" (105).
